About the District Electoral Areas Review

The District Electoral Areas Commissioner is currently engaged in a review of District Electoral Areas in accordance with the legislation.

The legislation requires the Commissioner to submit a report to the Secretary of State setting out his recommendations for the grouping together of the wards in each local government district in Northern Ireland into electoral areas for the purpose of local government elections in each of those districts.

The Commissioner is assisted in his work by three statutory assessors.

The Secretary of State, at the request of the Commissioner, may appoint a number of Assistant Commissioners to hold public inquiries and provide advice to the Commissioner. A small Secretariat of staff on secondment from the Northern Ireland Civil Service provides administrative support to the Commissioner.

Professional and technical advice and support is provided by staff from Land and Property Services, the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency, and the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland, as required.
